FACT SHEET: WHAT: CAPITAL CAMPAIGN TO BENEFIT THE FORT HAMILTON HOSPITAL Goal is to raise $16M to $18M to construct a two-story addition on the Hospital's Haldimand Avenue side on land owned by the Hospital. A new 16-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU) will occupy the second floor of the addition, with the first floor dedicated to expanded outpatient ancillary services. The existing 12-bed ICU unit, built nearly 20 years ago, would be converted to meet additional intensive care or step down patient needs. WHY: The need for additional intensive care space has grown rapidly over the past few years. The closure of Mercy Hospital Hamilton not only reduced the number of intensive care beds in the city, but also increased the number of patients being treated at The Fort Hamilton Hospital by approximately 50 percent. A larger ICU will allow for greater efficiencies, comfort and privacy and the treatment of more complex patients. The expansion of the Carruthers Emergency Center helped to meet the emergency needs presented by this rapid growth, but also brings more critically ill patients to the Hospital. Combined with a growth in the aging population that uses intensive care treatment more often, the ICU need has become severe. A new state-of-the-art building will also accommodate new technology, Radiology; Cardiology, MRI and other diagnostic services. Existing utilities and infrastructure will be updated.
