Women's Health Services at the Fort Hamilton Hospital

About Us
The Fort Hamilton Hospital provides a broad range of women's health services. Services include mammography, osteoporosis care, free community programs, self-breast examination instructions, support groups, as well as obstetric/gynecological care.

More than 1,200 babies are born in The Family Birthplace. The level II labor, delivery and nursery services at Fort Hamilton are equipped to handle not only routine deliveries, but high-risk pregnancies and emergency situations as well. This is done all in one room in our beautifully decorated Labor, Delivery, Recovery, Postpartum (LDRP) suites. The care provided begins well before labor and delivery occur. We offer a full-range of outpatient prenatal services and testing procedures to monitor your health as well as your baby's. Our Preterm Labor Prevention Program pairs women who have a history or high likelihood of premature labor with a labor and delivery nurse in an effort to control situations which may lead to an early delivery.

Our staff of obstetricians and midwives are skilled in all phases of childbirth, and are trained to handle complications should they arise. High-risk pregnancies and other needs such as those related to infertility can also be addressed. Many of our nurses are certified in obstetrical nursing, bringing particular expertise to your birthing experience.

Lactation Consultation
At the Family Birthplace lactation consultants are available seven days a week. To encourage and support breastfeeding, the lactation consultant will come to your room and provide mothers and families with proper techniques and breastfeeding education. The baby and mother will return to the hospital two days after discharge for an appointment with the lactation consultant. Additional visits can be arranged as needed at no cost to the family.

The lactation consultants provide a breastfeeding support group monthly. At these meetings the lactation consultants are available for questions, as well as other nursing mothers.

The lactation consultants can provide families with resources for breast pumps and continued support for the working mother.

Classes
We offer a wide range of childbirth education classes for you and your family to make sure everyone is ready for the new arrival.  From unit tours and newborn care to sibling classes and refresher courses for experienced moms, you’ll find what you need to prepare for delivery and beyond.
